Drywall finishing is the process of applying layers of tape and mud to plasterboard to achieve your desired level of smooth finish. Your level of finish will depend on the use for your room as well as the type of paint you want to use.

The Six Levels of Drywall Service

There are six levels of drywall finish numbered from 0-5. Each level requires an increasing amount of labor and materials, thus increased cost. Just to give you an idea of what this means, level 0 is barebones drywall, and level 5 is the highest level of finish.

Level 0 - No taping whatsoever. You generally find level 0 only in unfinished construction projects.

Level 5 - This is the highest level of finish. In addition to numerous layers of tape and joint compound applied to joints and angle there is one more skim coat of compound applied to the entire surface of the plasterboard.

Many tradesmen claim to do level 5 skim-coating, but few can get it right. Meanwhile, many customers think they want level 5 finishing, but its actually not necessary most of the time.

You need level 5 finishing whenever high gloss paints are desired or for severe lighting conditions. That's when light hits the wall at an extreme angle, causing imperfections and shadows to be more noticeable. In that case, only the highest quality drywall finish can provide a smooth surface that prevents joints and fasteners showing on your walls.

As a result, level 5 finishing is the most expensive drywall finish and only appropriate for customers with the highest budgets. When you want only the best Stone Age Renovations are experts in smooth skim coats.

If you are on a stricter budget, that's ok too! Even level 4 finishing can provide excellent results for most specifications when applied correctly.
